Orange Car Accident Lawyer
We keep a second office at 1100 Town & Country Road, which sits inside the one square mile of Orange County where the most traffic in the region converges. The city also hosts UCI Medical Center, the county's Level I trauma center, which means many of the most serious crash victims in Orange County end up here regardless of where they were hit.
The Orange Crush
The interchange where the I-5, SR-22 and SR-57 all meet, known locally as the Orange Crush, is the defining traffic feature of the city. Three freeways, multiple connector ramps stacked at different levels, and surface street access from The City Drive and Chapman Avenue all occupy the same footprint.
The collision patterns there are specific and they recur:
- Short-distance weaving, where a driver must cross several lanes between a freeway entry and a connector exit, producing side-swipe and merge collisions.
- Abrupt congestion on the connectors, where traffic stops around a blind curve and following drivers have minimal sight distance. These become chain-reaction collisions involving three or more vehicles, where apportioning fault requires real investigation rather than assuming the last driver is responsible.
- Heavy truck traffic. The corridor carries substantial freight, and trucks are restricted to the right-hand lanes under Vehicle Code 21655 while a vehicle towing a trailer is limited to 55 mph under section 22406 regardless of the posted limit.
- Event traffic surges from Angel Stadium and Honda Center, both immediately adjacent, which load the same ramps in a short window before and after events.
In a multi-vehicle freeway collision, the single most valuable piece of evidence is usually the event data recorder in each involved vehicle, showing speed and braking in the seconds before impact. It is also the evidence most likely to disappear when a car is repaired or sold for salvage. If you were in a pileup, do not release your vehicle before it has been documented.
Surface streets and the Old Towne grid
- Chapman Avenue, the city's main east-west spine, running from the freeways through Old Towne and out past Chapman University.
- Tustin Avenue and Glassell Street, the principal north-south routes, with Tustin Avenue carrying heavy volume to the SR-22 and SR-55.
- Katella Avenue and Lincoln Avenue, wide arterials with high speeds and frequent left-turn conflicts.
- The Old Towne Plaza traffic circle and the surrounding grid, where narrow streets, angled parking and pedestrian traffic produce lower-speed collisions that still injure people on foot.
- The City Drive, serving the medical center, the courts and the shopping center, with constant turning movements and pedestrian crossings.
- Chapman University area streets, with student pedestrian, bicycle and scooter traffic concentrated in a few blocks.
Old Towne has a specific feature worth noting: the BNSF rail line and the Metrolink and Amtrak station run through the area, and the at-grade crossings create their own category of serious collision. Rail crossing cases involve federal regulation, the railroad's own investigators arriving within hours, and potential claims against the railroad, a signal maintenance contractor or a public entity responsible for the crossing design. They need immediate attention because the physical evidence is cleared quickly.
Serious trauma care in Orange
UCI Medical Center on The City Drive is Orange County's Level I trauma center, and Children's Hospital of Orange County is immediately nearby for pediatric trauma. Practically, this means that if someone in your family was critically injured anywhere in the county, there is a good chance they were brought here.
Two things follow for a claim. First, a trauma admission generates a large, well-documented medical record very quickly, which is useful, and a very large bill, which creates lien issues that need managing from the start. Hospitals can assert liens under the Hospital Lien Act, Civil Code section 3045.1, and those amounts are frequently negotiable at the end of a case in a way that directly changes what a client takes home.
Second, families dealing with an ICU admission are in no position to handle an insurance adjuster, and adjusters call anyway. If you are sitting in a waiting room at UCI, the honest advice is to not give a recorded statement, not sign anything, and get the calls redirected.
After a crash in Orange
- Call 911 for any injury. Orange Police handle city streets; the CHP handles the I-5, SR-22, SR-55 and SR-57 and the interchange.
- Get examined. UCI Medical Center is in the city for serious trauma, and St. Joseph Hospital is nearby.
- File the DMV SR-1 within 10 days for any injury or more than $1,000 in property damage.
- Preserve your vehicle before repairs if the collision involved multiple cars or a truck, because the onboard data may decide fault.
- Request the collision report after a few days from the agency that responded.
- If a rail crossing, a city vehicle or a roadway condition was involved, act within days. Public entity claims are generally due in six months.

Orange questions
I was in a multi-car pileup on the connector ramps. How is fault decided?
Not by assuming the last driver caused it. Fault in a chain-reaction collision is apportioned among drivers based on physical evidence: damage geometry, the sequence of impacts, and each vehicle's event data recorder showing speed and braking. California's pure comparative fault rule means several drivers can each bear a percentage, and preserving your own vehicle's data before repairs matters.
A truck was involved. Does that change anything?
Substantially. Interstate carriers are federally regulated, must carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage under 49 CFR 387.9, and generate electronic evidence including logs and engine data that sits on short retention schedules. Preservation letters need to go out within days, not months.
My family member is in the ICU at UCI. What should we be doing right now?
Focus on the medical side and stop the insurance side from happening without you. Do not give recorded statements, do not sign releases or medical authorizations, and let the calls go to a lawyer. Separately, the hospital will likely assert a lien, which is normal and is negotiable later, so it is not a reason to rush a settlement now.
Where would my lawsuit be filed?
Orange County Superior Court. Unlimited civil injury cases go to the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana, a short distance from the city. Most claims resolve with the insurer without a lawsuit ever being filed.
